Disney movies are known for having yummy looking food. Whether it be the pastries in Brave, the food cooked by a rat in Ratatouille, and of course, the beignets in Princess and the Frog!
You can't have a movie set in New Orleans without having beignets be a plot point and everyone who has been to Disneyland knows that you can't go to Disneyland without grabbing the Mickey Beignets!
These fried squares are dough make a perfect brunch item for you next Disney day!
¼ Cup butter melted
3 Teaspoons instant yeast
1 Cup warm water
1 Egg
1 Teaspoon cinnamon
¾ Cup sugar
3-4 Cups flour
Whisk eggs, salt, butter, sugar, warm water, and yeast in a large bowl.
Add the flour one cup at a time to yeast mixture. Using a strong spatula to mix at the beginning and using your hands to mix once it gets too difficult with the spatula.
Once the dough is fully mixed, turn onto a floured surface and knead for ten minutes.
Grease a large bowl with spray oil and transfer the dough to the bowl. Cover with a damp paper towel and put in the oven to proof. (Make sure the oven is off!) Proof until the dough is doubled in size about 45 minutes-1 hour.
Once the dough is doubled in size, punch down and roll out into a rectangle. Cut into 1 ½ in by 1 ½ in squares and let proof for another hour.
While the dough is proofing, heat the oil to about 350 - 375 degrees Fahrenheit. I like to use a dutch oven to deep fry.
Place 4-5 beignets in the oil at a time and fry for 2 minutes on each side. Take out of the oil and place on a wire cooling rack to let the excess oil drain. Once cool, roll in powdered sugar and serve!
